Playa de San Juan is a very wide sandy city beach in Alicante, stretching from the Cabo de la Huerta headland to the beaches of El Campello. It is about 2.9 km long and some 85 m wide, with fine golden sand. The beach has held the Blue Flag without interruption since 1987 and also carries the SICTED quality award. It is lined by the Avenida de Niza, with hotels, restaurants and beach bars (chiringuitos). There are beach volleyball and mini-football pitches, outdoor fitness and calisthenics equipment, and children's play areas. You can rent windsurfing and paddleboarding gear and pedal boats, and there is a channel for non-motorised craft at access point 1. Facilities include first-aid posts, toilets, sunbed and parasol hire, and foot-rinse taps. Wheelchair walkways run almost to the water's edge at access point 28 all year round and, in summer, also at access point 10, where an assisted bathing service for people with disabilities operates. Visitors praise the cleanliness, fine sand, clear water and sheer space, and several write that there is room to spare even at the height of the season. One reviewer calls it a quieter and roomier alternative to the beaches in the city centre. Some visitors mention seaweed, and one writes that there was quite a lot of it in August and that the beach has no showers. Dogs are allowed only out of season, from 1 November to 1 March, and must be kept on a lead. It is easy to reach from the centre on tram lines 3, 4 and 5 or on buses 21 and 22. The Alicante Golf course lies close to the beach.
One visitor writes that there are no showers on the beach and the foot-rinse taps sometimes run dry, so it's worth bringing a bottle of water to rinse off. The same review mentions quite a lot of seaweed along the shore in August.
