El Mesón de la Costa is a family restaurant in Torrevieja, run since 1989, with an atmospheric interior of stone walls and hundreds of Iberian hams hanging from the ceiling. The founders' daughter runs the kitchen, while their two sons, both sommeliers, look after a cellar of more than 500 wine labels, one of the widest lists in the area. Fish and shellfish from the bay are displayed at the entrance, and the house is known for salt-baked fish, grilled baby octopus and dry-aged beef you finish yourself on a hot stone. The menu also includes tapas, roast kid goat and suckling pig. According to reviews, desserts are served in the wine cellar, and one guest warns that the restaurant gets very busy on Sundays.
Guest favourites: salt-baked fish, grilled baby octopus, bread with chorizo spread, dry-aged ribeye and tenderloin you finish yourself on a hot stone, desserts; a very wide wine and drinks list. Very busy on Sundays. Waiters are keen to suggest extras — it's easy to over-order.
