Teatro Principal de Alicante

Centro

Teatro Principal de Alicante is the city's main stage, a neoclassical theatre on Plaza Ruperto Chapí in the centre of Alicante that opened on 25 September 1847. It was designed by Emilio Jover, with a façade of six columns topped by a triangular pediment and a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with a large central chandelier. Partly destroyed by bombing in 1939, it reopened in 1941, and between 1985 and 1992 it underwent a major renovation of the stage and interiors. The programme covers theatre (including a classical theatre festival), dance, opera and zarzuela, concerts and family shows. Reviewers praise the acoustics, the cosy interior and the comfortable seats, and the theatre offers guided tours for groups.
